Since 2008, Eureka! has been conducting applied social and territorial research in the Canary Islands, coordinating fieldwork and primary data collection directly across the archipelago. We combine quantitative and qualitative methods within a single research design and work in English with international partners, from the initial communication and coordination of the project to the analysis and final reporting.

The Canary Islands cannot be analysed as an extension of mainland Spain.

The European Commission recognises the Canary Islands as one of the EU’s nine outermost regions, whose remoteness, insularity and economic dependence require specific policies and measures.

Insularity, geographical distance from continental Europe, territorial fragmentation, demographic composition, tourism dependence and differences between islands shape any serious social, economic or territorial analysis of the Canary Islands.

Eureka! combines local knowledge, primary research and methodological design to explain not only what the data show, but also what those findings mean in the particular context of the archipelago.

The territory is not merely where fieldwork takes place.
It is part of the research question, the methodological design and the interpretation of results.

From the research question to usable evidence

Eureka! can contribute throughout the entire research process, not only when a project needs fieldwork to be carried out. We participate from the initial definition of the problem, helping to establish the research objectives, indicators, territorial scope, population, sampling approach and most appropriate methods.

Once the project has been designed, we undertake or coordinate the primary research required in the Canary Islands. Depending on the objectives, this may include surveys, interviews, focus groups, observation, stakeholder consultation or the collection of local social and economic data.

The evidence obtained is then subjected to quantitative, qualitative and territorial analysis. Our local knowledge allows us to interpret the findings within the particular reality of the archipelago and to identify differences that may exist between islands, territories or population groups.

Finally, we translate the results into clear conclusions, practical implications and reports that institutions, universities and project partners can use for evaluation, planning and decision-making.

The result is not simply local data. It is evidence interpreted in context and transformed into useful knowledge.
